COVID-19 Not Over Yet: ‘Deadly Infection Spreading, Killing 1700 Globally Every Week’, Warns WHO - Published July 18, 2024
According to a 15 July WHO statement, the SARS-CoV-2 PCR per cent positivity increased from 5.6 to 7.1% in a four-week reporting period.
New Delhi: US President Joe Biden on Thursday tested positive for COVID-19 with mild symptoms, said the White House. Following the development ahead of the Presidential elections in the USA, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a warning to the public that “Covid is still not over”. The WHO said that the deadly infection is still widespread, killing 1700 people every week across the globe.
The top health agency has asked people to take basic precautions including a vaccine, mask, and testing.
According to a 15 July WHO statement, the SARS-CoV-2 PCR per cent positivity increased from 5.6 to 7.1% during the four-week reporting period from 27 May to 23 June 2024. During this period, an average of 16888 specimens were tested for SARS-CoV-2 each week.
KP.3 and LB.1, both descendent lineages of JN.1 and variants under monitoring (VUMs) showed an increasing prevalence globally.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO director-general has issued a warning, stating that vaccination rates among health professionals and the over-60s, two demographics most at risk of dying from COVID, are alarmingly falling.
“WHO recommends that people in the highest-risk groups receive a Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of their last dose,” said Tedros.
The WHO has received reports of about seven million COVID-19 deaths. However, it is believed that the actual number of deaths from the epidemic is much greater. Tedros, in May 2023, declared the end of the Covid-19 international public health emergency.
