COVID-19 cases increase in all prefectures; hospitalizations exceed 2,000 for first time in three months - Published July 12, 2024Follow the link to read in JapaneseOn the 12th, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced that the total number of new cases of COVID-19 reported to the approximately 5,000 designated medical facilities nationwide from the 1st to the 7th was 39,874, with 8.07 cases per designated medical facility. This is about 1.39 times the number from the previous week (5.79 cases), and marks the ninth consecutive week of increase. During the same period last year, the number was 9.14 cases per designated medical facility. Okinawa had the most cases by prefecture with 29.92, followed by Kagoshima with 23.13 and Miyazaki with 19.74. Tokyo had 7.14, Aichi with 9.73, Osaka with 6.40 and Fukuoka with 11.28. The number of cases increased in all 47 prefectures. The number of newly hospitalized patients reported to designated medical institutions in the week ending on the 7th was 2,340, an increase of 632 from the previous week (1,708). This is the first time the number has exceeded 2,000 in about three months since the end of March.
