Bird flu found in southern Taiwan poultry farms - Published Nov 26, 2024By Jono Thomson TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency said on Monday (Nov. 25) it had received reports of H5N1 bird flu in south Taiwan and called on poultry farmers to be vigilant. The agency said it has been detected in 39 winter migratory birds and 12 birds on poultry farms, per CNA. The cases were detected in Chiayi, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. Farmers should strengthen epidemic prevention measures in response, the agency said. The agency’s local branches have disinfected sampling stations and nearby poultry farms in line with standard operating procedures. The agency said since September, 51 cases of bird flu have been detected in Japan, which is on the upstream migratory path from Taiwan. It said the first case was discovered in northern Hokkaido at the end of September, eventually spreading to southern Japan by November. The agency also reported bird flu cases in Tainan on Nov. 15. A World Health Organization report published in April found the global public health risk of influenza A (H5N1) viruses is low. It said the risk of infection for workers exposed to the virus is “low to moderate depending on the risk mitigation measures in place.”
