Seniors getting COVID-19 vaccines more than last year - Published Nov 14, 2024by: Tyler Hill URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The CDC said almost 40% of people 65 and older have received the updated COVID-19 vaccine this year. That number is up 15% from last year. The rates in younger adults are up as well, but not as much as in the senior population. Health officials at Carle said they’re encouraged by these numbers, and part of the reason they may be up is the updated vaccine that came out. “I think the reason that we’re seeing such an increase this year is because of timing of the vaccine,” said Carle Associate Chief Medical Officer Robert Healy. “Meaning that the CDC, and the bodies that accredit vaccines, did it a little earlier this year.” He said Carle has seen hundreds more COVID vaccinations compared to last year’s numbers. Healy also said it’s a great time to get the shot since respiratory viruses peak around the holidays. “We were able to have people come in, and when they’re due for their flu shot, also offer the COVID 19 shot,” he said. “And people are pairing those up a lot more this year.”
