Irish hospital issues full visitor ban as Covid-19 infections jump 60 per cent - Published July 1, 2024Irish hospitals are on alert this week as a new wave of Covid-19 infections sweeps the country. Confirmed cases of the virus jumped by over 60 per cent last week and hospitalizations doubled, according to government data. St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny issued a full visitor ban over the weekend due to the uptick, as well as a Norovirus outbreak. “The ban is due to increased infection control measures required for Covid-19 and Norovirus (Vomiting & Diarrhoea)," the hospital said. "Access to these wards will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances, as determined by each ward manager. Designated visitors will be asked to wear a mask and appropriate PPE whilst in the hospital." The most recent Covid-19 data was released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre on June 22. In the week leading up to that Saturday, there were 1,042 confirmed cases in the country, compared with 650 cases the week before.
