Feds ran 'deeply flawed' COVID messaging campaign, overstated risk to kids, House GOP says - Published Oct 23, 2024

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Republicans on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee released a report Wednesday condemning the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for alleged failures in its COVID-19 messaging campaign.
Researchers behind the report sought to determine why the campaign preceded “a collapse of trust in public health messaging.” That campaign, which received $900 million in funding, was “deeply flawed,” a release on the report claims.
“While the Biden-Harris administration’s public health guidance led to prolonged closures of schools and businesses, the [National Institute of Health] was spending nearly a billion dollars of taxpayer money trying to manipulate Americans with advertisements—sometimes containing erroneous or unproven information,” Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., said. “By overpromising what the COVID-19 vaccines could do—in direct contradiction of the FDA’s authorizations—and over emphasizing the virus’s risk to children and young adults, the Biden-Harris administration caused Americans to lose trust in the public health system.”
The report accused HHS of claiming “without evidence” that COVID-19 vaccines were more effective against the disease than they actually are. It also slammed the agency for allegedly overstating the risks of COVID on children and the effectivity of masks against infection.
The lawmakers called on HHS to make sweeping institutional changes, including adopting a culture of “transparency and accountability” and refraining from attempting to “silence dissenting scientific opinions.”
“Americans cannot afford another botched government response to a future pandemic,” they wrote.
HHS did not respond to a request for comment from The National News Desk on Wednesday.
Lawmakers continue to scrutinize leading COVID officials as new information surfaces from the pandemic era. Former New York City Mayor’s Office Senior Advisor for Public Health Jay Varma last month admitted to hosting large nude gatherings during the pandemic while urging city residents to remain isolated, according to undercover video posted by podcaster Steven Crowder.
“Everyone had a blast because everyone was so pent up,” he said of that experience. “Something about bodies being close to each other, just being naked with friends.”
Varma also admitted these “deviant” sexual practices were “not COVID-friendly” but allowed him to be his “authentic self.”
“It would have been a real embarrassment,” Varma said when asked what would happen if New Yorkers found out about his actions.
