Imee Alarmed At COVID-19 Deaths After Expose On Pentagon Smear Campaign Vs Sinovac - Published June 26, 2024
Senator Imee Marcos expressed alarm at the thousands of COVID-19 deaths at a time an alleged US military plan was launched to discourage the Filipinos from taking the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine.
Marcos on Tuesday (June 25) led a foreign relations committee hearing into the alleged Pentagon operation to discredit the Sinovac vaccine in the Philippines through the use of social media trolls.
During the hearing, Marcos asked Department of Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire about the casualty count at the onset of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, when the alleged Pentagon plan was launched as reported by Reuters.
Vergeire said there were: 33,991 illnesses and 1,936 deaths in the second quarter of 2020; 158,404 illnesses and 3,678 deaths in the last quarter of 2020; 646,760 illnesses and 12,689 deaths in the second quarter of 2021; and 298,452 illnesses and 7,878 deaths in the last quarter of 2021.
She clarified that these figures are not cumulative.
The death toll was at its worst during the third quarter of 2021 because of the deadly Delta COVID-19 variant, with 1,117,896 illnesses and 21,424 deaths, Vergeire added.
“So it climbed radically. These are shocking numbers. Mortality and morbidity rates are terrible, and this is the period the Reuters article referred to,” Marcos said.
Marcos said the disinformation campaign against the more accessible vaccine at the time – Sinovac – discouraged the Filipinos from taking the Chinese jab and made them more vulnerable to the illness.
“Disinformation had its malign effects. The numbers are shocking. We’re talking about millions, hundreds of thousands. This is no meager number. This is much worse than the body count and casualties of war,” Marcos said.
