Father prepares to lay his daughter to rest after COVID-19 complications a month after testing positive - Published Aug 30, 2024
It's very rare that we see post-covid complications blamed for someone's death in this "post-pandemic" world. I thought this was worthy of presevation here for that.
ARLEY, Ala. —
Amid a rise in COVID-19 cases in Alabama, one father in Arely is preparing to lay his daughter to rest.
Byron Farmer said his daughter Amber tested positive for covid about a month ago, but she just died unexpectedly from complications on Wednesday. After she came down with COVID-19, Byron told WVTM 13 his daughter never fully recovered and battled strep throat and mono. He said doctors believe Amber may have ultimately died from an autoimmune syndrome. Even though he’s a Desert Storm veteran, Byron feels losing his daughter is the hardest thing he’s ever dealt with.
“You try to be the strong man and no emotions, but it just rips you apart,” he said. “It really does. She was my shadow on a lot of things. She wanted to be a princess, but she was about halfway a tomboy. I’ve been a mechanic all my life, so she’d be out there at the shop with me tinkering on something — tearing something up. She loved tools.”
Byron called his daughter a fixer who loved to help people. He said she loved kids, and kids loved her, and that’s why she wanted to be a prenatal or labor and delivery nurse. Amber was supposed to start classes at UAB this past Monday on a full-ride scholarship. Byron said he’s still having trouble thinking about his middle child not being able to achieve her dreams.
“She was trying to make the fullest of it and just. I just can’t. I can’t put it together, of her not being in it. I just can’t say that she wouldn’t graduate and become a very good nurse," Bryson Farmer said.
Amber’s funeral is on Sunday.
Her school held a balloon release Friday night during Meek High School’s football game, and the band played “Amazing Grace” in her honor.
