Carroll County Schools close after 25% of teachers contract illnesses - Published Aug 29, 2024
CAROLLTON, Ky. (WAVE) - Carroll County students will have an unexpectedly long Labor Day weekend holiday.
Classes were interrupted and schools were closed Thursday due to the spread of a variety of illnesses.
“We’ve seen COVID, strep throat,” Dr. Sarah Hollis, a Norton Healthcare Family Practitioner in Carrollton said. “I’ve also seen a stomach bug going around recently, a couple of cases pretty severe. I had to give IV fluids in the office yesterday.”
On what should have been just the 12th day of classes, the district had to hit the pause button on the school year.
A quarter of Carroll County staff, more than double the percentage of sick students, either called in sick or left for home early on Wednesday.
“This becomes a safety concern,” a letter to parents from Superintendent Casey Jaynes said. “As staff become ill, we have to combine classrooms, and the learning environment is compromised.”
On Thursday, custodians began disinfecting surfaces at schools to kill the germs everyone left behind. The hope is that work like this, coupled with the longer than expected holiday weekend, will get the school year back on track.
“I wouldn’t be inviting the grandkids over to visit,” Dr. Hollis said. “I just kind of keep to yourself unfortunately. It’s Labor Day weekend but you might want to skip that family barbecue if you’re the one that’s sick so we can avoid spreading this further.”
Carroll County High School’s Friday night home football game was also canceled.
“The decision to cancel the CCHS football game was made for the safety of our players, as we have several who are injured or have been ill this week and have not had the opportunity to prepare for the contest,” Superintendent Jaynes said in his letter.
The two days of classes will be made up later in the school year.
School resumes on Tuesday.
