CDC Says COVID-19 Is Now Endemic Across The World; What Does That Mean? - Published Aug 27, 2024Another one that made me physically ill to read... Here's a bit of the minimizing bullshit that passes for health news these daysThere has been a huge surge in COVID-19 cases across the United States, according to says Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to experts, even though the infection is manageable, the pesky threat just doesn't disappear. However, earlier this month, Aron Hall, deputy director for science at the CDC, described COVID-19 as being endemic worldwide. Hall said the virus continues to circulate and has become more predictable. “COVID-19 is still a very significant problem,” he told NPR, “But one that can now be managed against the backdrop of many public health threats and not as sort of a singular pandemic threat. And so how we approach COVID-19 is now very consistent with how we approach other endemic diseases.” Experts say endemic means a disease or condition that happens regularly – at an expected rate. Meanwhile, the epidemic is when cases increase “beyond what is expected for a time and place, or population. “COVID-19 is a virus that is likely to continue to be with us for a long time, and CDC approaching it that way, focusing on strategies for preventing severe disease and protecting those most at risk,” Hall said. “Its health impacts increasingly resemble those of other respiratory viral illnesses, including influenza and RSV,” the spokesperson added.
