Wayne Hills Preschool Center closed for the week after staff test positive for COVID-19 - Published Aug 21, 2024WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) - Waynesboro City Public Schools announced the Wayne Hills Preschool Center will close for the remainder of the school week, after several staff members tested positive for COVID-19. Although the school year just began, the preschool is already dealing with multiple COVID cases among staff and students. Assistant Superintendent of Waynesboro Public Schools, Ryan Barber, said 11 employees tested positive for the virus, leaving the school unable to meet its requires child-to-staff ratio. “The number of positive cases increased as we were going through the school day,” Barber said, “The ratio we have to maintain is based [on] state and federal law, and we weren’t able to maintain that.” The preschool sent staff and students home with COVID tests, asking them to quarantine based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We know it’s an inconvenience; it’s one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make, because we know our families are relying on our schools,” Barber said. “We would love to be able to be open. Frankly, I wish I wasn’t having to talk about COVID-19.” The facility will be deep cleaned over the weekend. Barber said he is hopeful that students will be able to return on Monday, August 26.
