Doctor: 1 in 3 ArkLaTex kids are testing positive for COVID-19 - Published Aug 19, 2024SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) — Doctors say they are seeing the usual summer surge in COVID-19 cases. “This is the COVID normal that we’ve seen the past four years,” said Dr. John Vanchiere, pediatric infectious disease specialist with Ochsner LSU Health. With the increased number of cases, there has been an established pattern of the virus in both adults and children. Vanchiere said 1 out of 3 children have tested positive for COVID-19. “One out of 4 or 1 out of 3 tests for COVID among kids are positive in our area. And it’s because we’re sort of in the middle of this summer surge of COVID activity.” With school back in session, doctors say they are expecting the summer surge to run a little longer. “Finding ways to get protection would be great. Other ways to get protection, not just sanitizers, not just masks, but the distance between desks,” mother Artavya Green said. “They have to walk in a straight line. You know, they might be a little bit too close. Teachers paying a little bit more close attention to them touching each other or invading each other’s space because of the 6-feet thing.” Parents hope administrators will take the necessary precautions to keep students safe. “Some parents don’t know their kid is sick, and then the kid gets to school and gets to sneezing and coughing and then the teacher don’t catch it or, if they do catch it, they tell them to cover they mouth. But you basically passing the germs,” Green said. It turns out that new research shows that Louisiana has the second-lowest COVID-19 vaccination rate in the U.S., with Oklahoma coming in third.
