Lansing Mayor Schor announces he has COVID - Published Aug 12, 2024
LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Mayor Andy Schor announced on Facebook he has tested positive for COVID.
“This past weekend I tested positive for COVID-19,” Schor wrote on Facebook. “I am vaccinated and fully boosted, so thankfully my symptoms are mild. I will follow all CDC guidelines and will isolate at home while symptomatic, conducting business remotely.”
Schor is among a growing number of people in Michigan testing positive for the virus, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Coronavirus website reports.
Michigan has established a robust wastewater surveillance program that can detect the increasing presence of COVID-19 in a given population. The water treatment plant takes a sample and runs a PCR test for the presence of the virus.
An increase in samples testing positive for the genes of the virus has been correlated with outbreaks as much as two weeks after the initial wastewater detection.
In mid-July the Charlotte Wastewater Treatment Plant registered an increase in positive samples. The Delta Township Wastewater Treatment Plants, on the other hand, has not registered a noticeable increase in COVID-19 tests. The Hillsdale Wastewater Treatment Plant has registered a decline over July.
Two sampling locations on MSU’s campus have noted an uptick in COVID-19 virus testing, while Delhi Township’s wastewater treatment facility has registered regular ups and downs of COVID-19 presence. Two testing locations in the City of East Lansing also show increases in COVID-19 presence in wastewater samples there as well.
The city of Jackson wastewater treatment plant has also been measuring an increase in COVID presence in samples throughout July.
Leslie’s wastewater treatment plant has begun registering an increase in COVID in samples.
