Haiti - FLASH : Livestock in many localities in the South and Southeast of the country affected by Anthrax - Published Aug 11, 2024
The Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR) informs the entire population, mainly cattle, goat and sheep farmers, that cases of diseases similar to wntrax have been discovered in Petit-GoĆ¢ve and in many localities in the South and South-East departments of the country.
The Ministry reminds that anthrax is a highly contagious disease. When an animal has the disease, blood can be seen coming out of all the orifices of its body, such as the ears, nostrils, etc... and it dies quickly.
People can also contract Anthrax. It can present in many forms: cutaneous, pulmonary (respiratory problems) and gastrointestinal.
For these reasons, the Ministry asks everyone to be very careful with animals that show symptoms of anthrax. Do not eat or sell meat from suspect animals. Be very careful with dead animals, if an animal dies suddenly, it is better to bury it in a 1.8m deep hole and cover it with quicklime.
The Ministry asks the population to follow all the advice of veterinary officers in their locality, in order to prevent the disease from spreading throughout the national territory. Remember that the Ministry was informed of the first cases on July 12.
Learn more about anthrax in humans :
Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis, a bacteria that is often fatal in animals (sheep, goats, cattle and pigs), which can be transmitted to humans by direct or indirect contact with infected animals or by inhaling the bacteria present in infected animal products (leather, wool, etc...). Eating undercooked meat from infected animals can also cause anthrax.
The cutaneous form of the disease is transmitted through the skin and is characterized by itching of the affected area, followed by the appearance of a small, painless bump that develops into a pustule and then an ulcer with a black spot in the center. The affected area is not painful, but the infection can cause fever, headache, and malaise. More than 95% of human cases of anthrax worldwide are due to the cutaneous form of the disease.
Symptoms of cutaneous anthrax appear almost immediately, within a day of infection.
The pulmonary form of the disease is transmitted by inhalation of the bacteria. The infection initially manifests itself with flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, and malaise. After several days, symptoms may progress to respiratory distress and shock. Anthrax can be fatal if antibiotic treatment is not started early enough.
Symptoms of anthrax appear 2 to 6 days after infection but may not be noticeable for 6 weeks or more.
The gastrointestinal form of the disease is transmitted by eating contaminated food. The infection causes abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Gastrointestinal anthrax is a rare and difficult to recognize infection.
Symptoms of intestinal anthrax appear 1 to 7 days after infection.
All 3 types of anthrax can be treated with a variety of antibiotics. Importantly, early antibiotic treatment can cure most cases of skin infections. Pulmonary and gastrointestinal anthrax are more serious infections. Treatment is possible in the early stages of the disease, but mortality rates remain high if antibiotic treatment is not started before respiratory symptoms appear.
Mortality of untreated anthrax :
Inhalational and meningeal anthrax: 100%
Cutaneous anthrax : 10 to 20%
Gastrointestinal anthrax : about 40%
Anthrax is not transmitted from person to person.
Anthrax is diagnosed by testing samples of blood, respiratory secretions, or skin wounds. The samples are sent to a laboratory to determine if they contain the bacteria that cause anthrax. Results are usually available about 2 days after the samples are taken.
