We are Volunteers for Paris 2024 and we resign due to the lack of Covid-19 measures - Published June 15, 2024
Could be argued that the lack of protection is 'bad' or 'ugly' material, but the fact that the volunteers have stood up for their basic rights to not be infected is a wonderful thing.
We have been enthusiastic in the preparation of the Games as international volunteers. However, we are more and more worried at the lack of any actions from the organizers to address the epidemic of Covid-19 that is still going on across Europe and the world.
We are volunteers, young and old, disabled and non-disabled, main-volunteers and substitutes, all brought up togther by our passion for sports, and involved on various assignements for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We have been enthusiastic in the preparation of the Games as international volunteers. However, we are more and more worried of the lack of any actions from the organizers to address the epidemic of Covid-19 that is still going on accross Europe and the world. We demand effective sanitary measures against the virus, to protect the inhabitants of Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis, the athletes, the public, and the volunteers. If no steps are taken, we will collectively resign of our assignments, and will not show up on the Oympic and Paralympic sites we have been staffed.
Covid-19 pandemic threat denial is not an antidote to contamination
We wholeheartedly wish to take part to the Games, and in order to so so, expect strong and immediate action from Paris 2024, to secure the competiton : performing tests, reducing the influx of visitors, encourage the participants to get booster-vaccines, install air purifiers, implement ventilation, impose compulsory FFP2 masks… Preventiv actions exist and have been validated by the scientific community.
Paris 2024 must enforce them in the Olympic and Paralympic villages, in the stadiums and arenas, in the public transit, and in all the iconic sites of the city showcased for this long awaited celebration of sports, peace, and friendship among peoples.
We call for the responsibility of Paris 2024 and its partners and sponsors, to take quick and resolute action to tackle seriously the threat of mass-contamination. W urge Paris 2024 to ensure the protection of its employees and volunteers, of the athletes and their teams, and of the public and the inhabitants.
Otherwise, this is an open-call for all the volunteers, athletes and officials, participants, and all the sponsors involved, to take your own responsibilities, and cancel your participation to Paris 2024 Olymipic and Paralympic Games.
To open the Games wide, we must not close our eyes on the epidemic !
About us
We are volunteers selected to perform various assignements at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As volunteers, we are willing to freely give our time and energy for the success of the Games. However, we are not willing to risk our own health, nor the health of our relatives, of the athletes, of the public, and the people woh live and work in Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis.
